I recently watched an interview with Oprah talking about her reason for not having children, using her self-awareness to understand that with her career aspirations, being the type of parent she would want to be, would mean that one priority would suffer. This is real honest reflection that many do not do before embarking upon parenthood and/or business. Heck, just life in it self. However it got me to thinking about my journey as a former successful Home educating parent, running three businesses at one point, during the pandemic, with a new-born, and my inevitable burnout. Why did I put myself through all of that, I woke up one morning quizzing myself, and the reality of the matter was this.... it was expected of me.
As a women, in society, we are expected to juggle many balls (sidenote: and do it without perspiring, smelling good and holding a stoic era of peace). These expectations are inherited, for most, in childhood too, from being asked to take on the Lion's share of chores, care for younger siblings, and to be a 'nice girl', we are trained to be the Stepford wives of the future. Until, we either crash and burn (and get asked why we didn't just ask for help - besides us likely telling people we were exhausted often) or facing the self-appointed disappointment of feeling like failures - a pursuit towards perfection that leaves us exhausted and later rocking in a Therapist's chair.
Please note (haha) I too am a Therapist, a pretty successful one at that, as well as a highly demanded Life Coach, Lecturer and more, yet here I was, falling prey to the inherited and societal expectations that I had to 'do it all'.
I am pleased to say that I have now recovered from my burnout, and during that, managed to finally be seen behind my high-functioning/unconscious Masking as a AuDH (Autism and ADD) woman! Yep, I still have some family and friends who find that still to hard to believe. I mean look at me, I am black, successful, empathetic, helpful, accomplished, a good Mum and supportive friend, I read emotions well and understand people 'really well', with 'great dress sense', how can that be a neurodivergent person... many have either directly or indirectly said haha. Another big misconception about neurodiversity and masking, but I will expand upon that another time. It needs a whole article in itself.
So, back to us as women doing the job of a Circus Clown, juggling twenty-balls at a time. It leads to burnout, self-esteem issues, potential relationship breakdowns, and health issues. It's time to recoup, re-prioritise and say 'no' to what does not serve our greater good.
Here's where I come in as a Life Coach, specifically for women (did I add great at advertising too? haha), allow me to work alongside you in bringing realistic goals to the table, with a tailored daily and weekly plan, goal projections and real-life support.
